Modi Gets Birthday Call From Trump After Weeks of Tariff Tantrums and Sudden U-Turn

Gen VP Malik says India-US ties are too deep to break, but tariffs and trust issues linger as trade talks cautiously move forward.

In a special conversation hosted by journalist Barkha Dutt, India’s former Army Chief General VP Malik, former diplomat Ambassador Dilip Sinha, and senior journalist Seema Sirohi discussed the revival of India-US trade talks amid tensions. The discussion touched on tariffs imposed by former President Donald Trump, claims from his aide Peter Navarro, and the deeper trust deficit now visible in the relationship.

The panel noted that despite political rhetoric and tariffs, India-US strategic and defense ties remain strong. Gen Malik stressed that security cooperation built over 25 years cannot be undone by a single administration. He underlined India’s focus on sovereignty, pointing to agreements on defense and continued joint military exercises.

Ambassador Sinha highlighted that while tariffs remain a stumbling block, the fact that Washington sent negotiators to Delhi signals progress. He urged caution in overreacting to Navarro’s rhetoric, which he said does not define policy.

Seema Sirohi emphasized the erosion of trust, noting India’s measured diplomatic responses to insults and its insistence on respect in international dealings. She argued that India would proceed with caution in the years ahead, balancing relations with the US, China, and Russia.

Closing the discussion, Barkha Dutt observed that while the ice between New Delhi and Washington appears to be breaking, deeper questions remain unresolved. Trust, tariffs, and shifting geopolitics will continue to shape the relationship. The talks may mark progress, but the future course will depend on sustained engagement and mutual respect.
