Trump’s Big Claim In UN | “Your Countries Are Going To..” | India Us Relations | Modi| Barkha Dutt

Donald Trump’s H-1B visa shocker and steep fee hike—slammed in India as anti-India and proof that America fears Indian talent—comes alongside tariff bombs that squeeze India’s economy.

Now, as Trump meets Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif and key leaders from Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, and Indonesia at the UN General Assembly in New York, Gaza and West Asian security dominate the global agenda.

The discussion features Barkha Dutt in conversation with Ambassador Navdeep Suri, former diplomat; Lt. Gen. Rakesh Sharma, Distinguished Fellow at VIF; and Air Marshal Sanjeev Kapoor, AVSM."

The recent discussion honed in on the changing nature of Indo-US ties in wake of the most recent policy move in relation to H-1B visas, changes unfolding geopolitically in West Asia, and new equations emerging within South Asia. The panel discussed the one-time H-1B application fee announced by the Trump administration that elicited reactions ranging from criticism within his own ranks, Steve Bannon and to concerns in India. Analysts read the move as causing short term uncertainty to Indian professionals, but also an opportunity for India to bolster its ecosystem, get talent back and build global capability centers.

Analysts highlighted that India will have to harness its soft power, writ large its ‘diaspora deficit’ alongside credible hard power and strategic autonomy to negotiate these complex global play dynamics. Its panelists concluded that proactive diplomacy, long-term planning, and domestic capability building are critical to maintaining India’s place in an unpredictable geopolitical landscape.

For India, this is a twin challenge: U.S. visa and trade restrictions on one side, and Trump’s Pakistan outreach on the other. With Modi calling for Atmanirbharta (self-reliance), how will India recalibrate its position between U.S. partnership, Pakistan’s rise in global talks, and the larger Israel–Palestine conflict?
