In March 2024, the Maldives tourism ministry reported a 33% decline in Indian tourist arrivals compared to the previous year, as per local media outlet Adhadhu. March 2023 saw over 41,000 Indian tourists, while only 27,224 visited in 2024. India's campaign promoting Lakshadweep over Maldives is cited as the primary reason. Formerly the second-largest source, India now ranks sixth with a diminished 6% market share due to heightened diplomatic tensions.
