Karan Johar: Nepotism Helps, But Only Talent Brings Success

Karan Johar tells Barkha Dutt that while nepotism gives a head start, only real talent keeps you successful. He sees trolling as proof he still matters.

In a candid conversation with renowned journalist Barkha Dutt, celebrated filmmaker Karan Johar—producer, director, and head of Dharma Productions—delved into the enduring debate on nepotism, the trolling he faces, and his personal reflections on fame. Johar, whose career has been marked by both critical acclaim and controversies, acknowledged that the word “nepotism” became a household term after being “launched” on his own talk show.

Speaking about his late father, Johar emphasized the struggles his family faced in the industry and admitted that star kids do receive a “first-mover advantage.” However, he was firm in stating that only talent and hard work can sustain a career, adding, “You are not going to be able to stick on if you don’t have what it takes.”

On the relentless trolling and constant scrutiny he faces online, Johar maintained a surprisingly positive outlook. He expressed gratitude that people care enough to talk about him—whether with love or hate—because indifference, he said, would be the worst outcome for an artist.
