Air India Crash: Pilot Sumeet’s Ageing Father Moves Supreme Court, Cites ‘Flawed Probe Report
A 91-year-old father moves the Supreme Court, challenging the Air India 171 crash probe, seeking justice and truth for his late pilot son.
The ailing 91-year-old father of late Air India pilot Captain Sumit Sabharwal has filed a writ in the Supreme Court challenging what he terms a “profoundly flawed” preliminary investigation into the Air India 171 crash. The petition demands a fresh probe, highlighting alleged bias and a deliberate attempt to blame pilot error while ignoring systemic issues.
Speaking to senior journalist Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story, Captain Sharath Panicker, a former Indian Air Force fighter pilot and Dreamliner (Boeing 787) commander, supported the call for deeper investigation. He explained technical concerns like unexplained RAT (Ram Air Turbine) deployments and repeated electrical anomalies in the Boeing 787 fleet. Captain Panicker also detailed recent incidents, including one where a 787 en route from Amritsar to Birmingham experienced sudden RAT deployment without clear cause, and another where autopilot failure led to a flight being diverted to Dubai.
He emphasized that while the Dreamliner is a reliable aircraft, such recurring issues warrant manufacturer Boeing’s active involvement and possible grounding of the fleet until safety checks are complete.
As Ms. Dutt concluded, beyond the technicalities lies a deeply human story — of a 91-year-old father seeking justice and truth for his son and others who perished. “This Diwali,” she said, “while the country celebrates, spare a thought for those still waiting for answers.”
