Bangladesh | Muhammad Yunus Provokes With “Greater Bangladesh” Map Gift to Pakistan General

Muhammad Yunus sparks outrage with a “Greater Bangladesh” map gift to Pakistan’s general, raising alarms over shifting regional ties.

In a recent episode that sparked diplomatic unease, Bangladesh’s interim leader and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus gifted Pakistan’s top general a book featuring a controversial “Greater Bangladesh” map, depicting India’s entire northeast as Bangladeshi territory. The gesture was seen as a provocative move, especially amid Yunus’s growing proximity to China and Pakistan, discussed on Mojo Story with host Zaffar Iqbal, Lt Gen Sanjay Kulkarni (Retd), and former diplomat Manju Seth.

Lt Gen Kulkarni cautioned that Yunus’s leadership is “self-appointed” and heavily influenced by radical groups. He highlighted Bangladesh’s deepening ties with Pakistan and China, warning of infiltration and the possibility of anti-India activities along the long, porous border. He also stressed the need for India to remain vigilant and strategic.

Ambassador Manju Seth noted that anti-India sentiment has been rising in Bangladesh, partly fueled by distorted historical narratives and radicalization in education. She emphasized that the current regime seems intent on rewriting history to portray India as an aggressor. Both experts expressed concern that foreign powers—particularly the U.S. and China—are exploiting regional instability to weaken India’s position in South Asia.

Towards the end, the discussion turned to India-China relations. Both guests agreed that improving ties with China, seen in the resumption of direct flights, could stabilize the region if managed carefully.

In conclusion, Barkha Dutt summarized that India faces a complex and rapidly changing neighborhood, requiring vigilance, diplomacy, and smart policymaking to secure its long-term interests.
