Bihar Decides: Yogendra Yadav Reacts to NDA’s Historic Win — What’s Next for the Opposition?
Yogendra Yadav explains why the NDA swept Bihar, where the opposition fell short, and what it must fix to offer a strong and credible choice to voters.
In this interview, political analyst, activist, and psephologist Yogendra Yadav speaks with Ms. Barkha Dutt about the NDA’s sweeping win in the Bihar Assembly elections. With the NDA crossing 200 seats, Yadav begins by calling the outcome disappointing for the opposition but not surprising. He explains that the NDA enjoyed clear structural advantages from the start.
Yadav shares four key reasons for the NDA’s dominance: a larger coalition, a wider social base, strong support from women mobilized by Nitish Kumar, and what he calls systemic support through administration, resources, and media influence. He adds that even without these systemic factors, the first three advantages alone gave the NDA a strong lead.
He explains how the opposition failed to expand beyond the narrow Muslim–Yadav voter group, which created a counter-reaction among other communities. He adds that issues like unemployment, weak health and education systems, and poverty should have helped the opposition gain ground, but they failed to appear as a credible alternative.
Speaking about the Congress, Yadav says it has goodwill but lacks organizational strength on the ground. He stresses the need for long-term work, not last-minute campaigning. He also reflects on the “vote-jod” debate, saying such campaigns raise awareness but do not win elections.
Conclusion (as per Ms Barkha Dutt’s view)
Ms. Barkha Dutt closes by noting that while the system may have biases, the opposition must still recognize its own weaknesses, rebuild its message, form wider alliances, and provide Bihar’s voters with a convincing alternative.
