Delhi Class 10 Student Suicide | "Why Is the Police Probe Delayed?" Students Protest Against School

Class 10 student Shoorya’s father demands justice after alleged teacher harassment leads to tragedy; protests grow as the family seeks accountability.

Shoorya, a Class 10 student of St. Columba’s School in Delhi, died by suicide after allegedly facing repeated harassment from his teachers. His father, Pradeep Patil, who recently returned from Maharashtra after the final rites, has filed an abetment-to-suicide case against four teachers named in Shoorya’s note. He continues to lead protests outside the school, demanding strict action and immediate arrests.

The discussion opens with Mr. Patil accusing the teachers of mentally torturing his son, who had been an all-rounder—active in sports, cultural activities, debates, and academics. Certificates and medals placed at the protest site reflect Shoorya’s achievements. Mr. Patil says that despite the severity of the case, the police have not arrested the accused even after seven days, raising concerns of possible influence or corruption.

Family members recall Shoorya being cheerful the night before, sharing a strawberry milkshake with his father and brother. His brother, Parth, says Shoorya had complained earlier about certain teachers humiliating him, but the family had planned to shift him to another school next year—not expecting matters to escalate so tragically.

Protesters, including students, parents, and supporters from across India, are demanding accountability from the school and authorities. Many point out that the school did not even observe a two-minute silence in Shoorya’s memory.

As interviewer Ms. Barkha Dutt highlights, the call now is not just for punishment but for a deeper audit of school systems—ensuring student safety, respectful teacher behaviour, and transparent institutional practices. The family insists that justice for Shoorya must prevent such tragedies for other children.
