Inside Trump's Pivot to Pakistan: Should India Be Worried? What’s Modi’s Next Move?
Trump’s new Gaza plan and sudden praise for Pakistan spark debate. Ambassador Arun Singh decodes its impact on India–U.S. relations in a talk with Barkha Dutt.
At a joint press conference with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, former U.S. President Donald Trump unveiled a surprising peace plan for Gaza and, unexpectedly, praised Pakistan and its Army Chief, Asim Munir. His remarks raised questions about shifting U.S. priorities, especially in the context of Washington’s evolving ties with India and Pakistan.
In a detailed discussion hosted by journalist Barkha Dutt at The Quorum Club, Gurgaon, former Indian Ambassador to the U.S., Arun Singh, explained the broader picture. He noted that U.S. relations with Pakistan are guided by strategic interests — from nuclear concerns to regional counterterrorism. He also hinted at possible business and personal connections influencing Trump’s outreach to Pakistan.
Ambassador Singh pointed out that Trump’s actions often reflect his personal agenda rather than long-term policy. He recalled how Trump once halted aid to Pakistan but later invited Imran Khan for talks. Singh explained that India’s clear stand against third-party mediation in the Kashmir issue remains firm.
He further analyzed recent tensions between India and the U.S., such as rising tariffs and visa changes, linking them to Trump’s domestic politics. Despite current challenges, Singh expressed optimism, noting that India and the U.S. share deep technological, economic, and strategic goals — especially in areas like AI, defense, and semiconductor innovation.
Barkha concluded that while Trump’s politics may appear unpredictable, India must navigate carefully — recognizing the temporary nature of such phases and focusing on long-term interests.
