Kashmir Terrorist Yasin Malik May Be Sentenced Soon: A Journalist’s Creepy Encounter
Veteran journalist Harinder Baweja opens up to Barkha Dutt about her unsettling encounter with Yasin Malik — a story of courage, danger, and journalistic grit.
In a deeply personal conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt on Mojo Story’s “Inside Out”, veteran journalist Harinder Baweja revisited one of the most disturbing experiences of her career — her interview with separatist leader Yasin Malik during the turbulent 1990s in Kashmir.
Baweja, who was reporting for India Today at the time, had set out to interview Malik shortly after his release as part of a government-backed deal. Then seen by many in the Valley as a freedom hero, Malik was charged with the kidnapping of Rubaiya Sayeed and killing of Indian Air Force officers.
Baweja recalled the uneasy experience of traveling on the same flight as Malik and witnessing the massive crowds that gathered to welcome him in Srinagar. But the real shock came when she met him for the interview. Malik allegedly made inappropriate advances, asking her, “Mujhse dosti karogi?” (“Will you be my friend?”), leaving her frozen in disbelief.
Despite the harassment, Baweja attempted a second interview, hoping professionalism would prevail. However, Malik again taunted her, saying, “Why don’t we talk about the moon and stars today?” and made veiled threats. Baweja eventually walked out without completing the interview — a decision she says she never regretted.
In her conversation with Dutt, Baweja emphasized how women journalists often remain silent about such experiences to avoid losing important assignments. Barkha Dutt concluded that Baweja’s courage in sharing this now serves as a reminder of the dangers, dignity, and determination that define true journalism.
