Ladakh Protests: Sonam Wangchuk Arrested, Ladakh Groups Reject Talks with Modi Government
Barkha Dutt’s panel urges justice, dialogue, and respect for Ladakh after activist Sonam Wangchuk’s arrest sparks national debate.
Ladakh’s renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, known for his innovations and environmental work, was arrested under the National Security Act (NSA) following protests demanding statehood and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule. The protests turned violent, leaving four dead and over 80 injured. His wife, Gitanjali Angmo, has filed a habeas corpus petition in the Supreme Court, calling his detention “illegal and opaque.”
In a detailed discussion hosted by Ms. Barkha Dutt, three voices joined the conversation — Lt. Gen. PJS Pannu (Retd.), former 14 Corps Commander; Ambassador P. Stobdan, ex-diplomat; and Sajjad Kargili, member of the High-Powered Committee and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA).
Kargili emphasized the need for a judicial probe, immediate release of detained protesters, and compensation for victims, adding that “talks can only resume in a fair environment.” Ambassador Stobdan acknowledged the movement’s peaceful origins but warned of possible external interference, urging the government to open dialogue and offer alternatives to meet local aspirations.
General Pannu highlighted Ladakh’s strategic importance, stating that any internal unrest could be exploited by foreign powers. He praised Ladakhis’ bravery and service to India, cautioning against labeling them “antinational.”
In conclusion, Ms. Dutt reminded viewers that Ladakh has always stood at the frontline of India’s defense, and its people deserve respect, dialogue, and recognition, not suspicion. She called for a judicial probe and constructive engagement to restore peace.
