Ladakh Protests: Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Speaks Out on His Arrest and Questions Modi Govt

Gitanjali J. Angmo defends Sonam Wangchuk, calling for peace and truth in Leh. She condemns violence and branding of Ladakh’s peaceful protests as unrest.

In an exclusive conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt, Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of educationist and innovator Sonam Wangchuk, expressed deep sorrow over the recent unrest and curfew in Leh, calling the events “sad and unfortunate.” She clarified that Leh’s people are peace-loving and patriotic, with no history of violent protests.

Angmo strongly condemned the curfew and the allegations made against her husband, who has led several peaceful and Gandhian protests seeking the implementation of the Sixth Schedule for Ladakh. She argued that the violence erupted only after security forces used tear gas on peaceful demonstrators. “If CRPF hadn’t fired tear gas, it would have remained peaceful,” she said.

Responding to claims linking Wangchuk to foreign influence or funding violations, Angmo dismissed them as false. She explained that Wangchuk’s organization, HIAL (Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh), has worked transparently with international bodies for research and innovation.

She also questioned the government’s actions, asking why a man recognized globally for environmental and educational contributions would be branded anti-national. “He has worked for India’s youth, the army, and sustainability. Calling him anti-national is shameful,” she stated.

Angmo urged the government to respect local voices and democratic decision-making for Ladakh’s future. “Development should not equal destruction,” she emphasized.

In her closing words, Barkha Dutt noted that the issue reflects the need for dialogue over dominance, urging peace and truth to prevail.
