My Mantra for Success Is…’: Author, Engineer, Parliamentarian – The Many Crowns of Sudha Murty
Dr. Sudha Murty’s inspiring journey from India’s first female engineer to Rajya Sabha MP reminds us that success is about purpose, not prestige.
At the We The Women 2025 platform hosted by journalist Barkha Dutt, renowned author, educator, and parliamentarian Dr. Sudha Murty captivated audiences with her wit, humility, and inspiring life journey. A Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awardee, Chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, and India’s first female engineer at TELCO, Dr. Murty’s conversation was a masterclass in resilience and grounded success.
Dr. Murty spoke about her early fight against gender discrimination—recalling how she boldly wrote to J.R.D. Tata to challenge the “ladies need not apply” rule—and how that postcard changed her life and corporate India’s mindset forever. She shared anecdotes from her marriage to N.R. Narayana Murthy, including how her ₹10,000 investment helped launch Infosys, now a global tech giant.
Reflecting on work, balance, and family, she emphasized that “there is no shortcut to success,” advocating discipline and dedication over luxury. She discussed her role as a mother, writer, and now parliamentarian, underlining that simplicity and integrity remain her guiding principles.
Concluding the session, Barkha Dutt lauded Dr. Murty as the “embodiment of quiet strength,” celebrating her belief that true happiness lies not in wealth or titles but in purpose and service.
