Remembering 26/11: Tribute to Chabad House Victims and India’s Muslim–Jewish Bond

A moving tribute by Muslim journalists honouring 26/11’s Jewish victims, celebrating centuries of Jewish–Muslim friendship rooted in harmony and respect.

A group of five Muslim journalists — Omar Gazi, Subuhi Khan, Muini Ahmed, Amina Begum — and calligrapher Tofi Zakaria came together to deliver a powerful message of harmony, history, and humanity. In their special video, they honoured the Jewish victims of the 26/11 Chabad House attack and highlighted the long-standing friendship between Indian Muslims and Jews.

The discussion opens with Omar Gazi introducing the team and their purpose: to remember the innocent Jewish victims brutally killed in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Each victim’s story is shared with dignity, reminding viewers of their lives, families, and dreams cut short.

The team also presents a hand-crafted memorial artwork created by calligrapher Zakaria and gifted to Chabad House. From there, the conversation moves into a detailed reflection on the centuries-old Jewish presence in India — from early settlers fleeing persecution to their cultural, academic, and civic contributions across the country.

They highlight how Muslim rulers, scholars, artists, and ordinary families embraced and collaborated with Jews, building a bond rooted in respect and shared heritage. Stories of Jewish–Muslim cooperation during India’s freedom movement, art revival, education, cinema, and community life showcase a friendship that survived global conflicts and historical challenges.

In her concluding note, interviewer Ms Barkha Dutt emphasises that this tribute is not just about remembrance — it is a reminder of India’s inclusive spirit and the deep ties that connect communities beyond religion. She stresses that the legacy of kindness, solidarity, and shared culture must continue.
