RSS Like BJP’s Mother’: Modi-RSS Relations, Muslim Outreach, and the Question — Who Is a Hindu?

Ram Madhav speaks to Barkha Dutt on the evolving RSS-BJP relationship, inclusivity, and the need to end ‘political untouchability’ in India.

In an exclusive conversation with journalist Barkha Dutt on Inside Out, Ram Madhav, former RSS National Executive Member and current BJP National General Secretary, offered rare insights into the enduring yet evolving relationship between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Speaking on the 100th year of the RSS, Madhav emphasized that the organization’s relevance lies in its ability to evolve without abandoning its core beliefs. He described the RSS as “a motherly organization” that nurtures the BJP but remains separate from day-to-day politics. Addressing misconceptions, he said the RSS does not control Prime Minister Modi or the BJP, but supports the party ideologically and morally.

Madhav reflected on the RSS’s journey from being misunderstood as an orthodox group to one that now emphasizes inclusivity, reform, and national unity. He noted how the RSS has opened dialogue with Muslim and Christian leaders and continues to adapt to social change. On caste, he highlighted the organization’s century-long effort to promote equality and discard outdated hierarchies.

Discussing India’s current political culture, he lamented the rise of “political untouchability” — where ideological opponents refuse engagement. He urged a return to civil political discourse, stressing cooperation despite differences.

Barkha Dutt, concluding the interview, called Madhav’s words on restoring dialogue and mutual respect a much-needed reminder for contemporary India’s polarized politics.
