South Asian University Gang Rape Case: Students Accuse Administration of Massive Cover-Up

Students at South Asian University demand justice after an 18-year-old’s alleged assault and a shocking administrative cover-up.

A shocking case of alleged sexual assault at Delhi’s South Asian University (SAU) has triggered massive student protests and exposed alarming lapses in campus safety and accountability. The survivor, an 18-year-old student, filed an FIR alleging that four men assaulted her inside the university campus after days of online harassment and threats.

According to her statement, hostel authorities discouraged her from calling her family or the police. “The warden told me to take a bath and that everything would be fine,” she said, alleging that her phone was forcibly covered when she tried to contact her parents. It took nearly 15 hours and the intervention of a friend before police action was initiated.

Students protesting on campus accused the administration of attempting to suppress the case. Speaking anonymously, they said the survivor’s friends were repeatedly turned away when seeking help, and that the hostel wardens made “insensitive and humiliating remarks,” even labeling the survivor “mentally unstable.”

Protesting students are demanding the termination of the wardens, accountability for officials who delayed the FIR, and the creation of a functional Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) with student representation.

As Ms. Barkha Dutt concluded, “This tragedy is not just about one horrific night — it’s about institutional failure and the silencing of survivors. Justice must be swift, and accountability non-negotiable.”
