Trump’s Envoy Warns India: Stop Russian Oil, Align with US
Trump’s envoy warns India to stop Russian oil buys, pushing closer US ties. Experts say India must balance ties with US, Russia, and China wisely.
Donald Trump’s chosen envoy to India, Sergio Gor, set a hard line during his Senate confirmation hearing, stating that India must stop purchasing Russian oil and instead work closely with the United States. He highlighted pulling India away from China’s influence as his top priority. The discussion on Mojo Story was hosted by journalist Barkha Dutt and joined by Ambassador Dilip Sinha and Professor Raja Mohan, two of India’s top strategic experts.
Gor emphasized that Trump’s stance is “crystal clear”—India cannot continue buying Russian oil. Ambassador Dilip Sinha warned that Gor, being a close Trump confidant, will exert intense pressure on India. He said this approach leaves little space for quiet backroom talks. Professor Raja Mohan pointed out that India never called Russian oil imports a political move, only a commercial decision based on price, which might give India “wiggle room” to gradually reduce purchases without appearing pressured.
The experts noted Trump’s use of tariffs as a weapon, including a 50% tariff on Indian goods, and his aim to push India to buy more American oil and farm products. They also said Gor’s additional role as envoy for South and Central Asia could unsettle neighbors but underlines India’s central role in the region.
In conclusion, Barkha Dutt remarked that India has shown smart diplomacy—especially with Prime Minister Modi’s recent appearance at the SCO summit—but must now keep balancing ties with the US, Russia, and China carefully to protect its long-term interests.
